FRANCE

Our school is located in Saint-Etienne, in the Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne region, at about one hour drive from Lyon, the third biggest city in France. There are are about 178,000 inhabitants. Our school is a scondary school where there are about 990 students aged between 10 and 16. There are about 70 teachers, a headmaster, a deputy head master, a nurse, a social worker, 2 school advisors, a career counsellor and 10 wardens who are in charge of the students’ school attendance and well-being. We also have students with special needs : foreign students (lately a lot of students have migrated from Africa, NorthAfrica, Italy, Spain and Eastern Europe), dyslexic students. There’s also a therapeutic department for children suffering from psychological and serious behavioral problems as a well as a newly-open department for students with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum. Up to 6 languages (German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, English) are taught, including French as a second language. Our school has just been rebuilt and the school community benefit from a pleasant school environment. We have also put a great emphasis on ICT devices. Our school has been involved in various environmental projects. In fact, the building is “eco- friendly”,in the first place, as our school has been labelized as “ecologically friendly”. A humaniy teacher, Mrs Mazouni has been in charge of the environment policy of the school for many years. She has organized environmental events within the school such as : recycling bottle caps to raise money for charities, she organized a ‘recycling ’ event and the students made “recycling disposal boxes” to be used in all the school classrooms. The students were also involved in charity associations and collected old school supplies to help a little girl suffering from a severe disease. Hacina Mazouni is also the head of an event intitled “the Race against Hunger” which is an NGO aimed at fighting poverty all over the world. Mrs Badra Derrer, an English teacher will coordinate the project as she has succesfully coordinated three previous Comenius and Erasmus + projects. Our students come from different social backgrounds. There’s every race, religion an culture within the confines of the quad. However, we have noticed that more than 56% of our students come from underprivileged social backgrounds. The economic crisis and the ongoing wars in the middle-east and in Eastern Europe has hit those families hardly, therefore, they have moved to Saint-Etienne. Many of them struggle to adapt to our country and our school system, therefore, they have to cope with scholastic difficulties especially in learning French. We realized that that it was also important to involve the families in the integration of their children, this is why French lessons are held for free within our school. So, our students' parents can benefit from 6 hours of French as a second language. We also work with a social center and we hold a non- formal meetings, once a week, in order for the parents to socialize with the staff and the school community. We call it the "Parents' coffee". ur students are aged 12-15. We intend to involve all kinds of students, migrants students, students with fewer opportunities, students suffering from disabilities, underprivileged students, privileged students. It is most important to include them all so they can work together, bond with each other and benefit from each other.
