Our school is a public secondary school located in Son Servera in the East of Mallorca, about 65km from the capital city. Our school offers degrees in Compulsory Secondary Education, with students aged from 12 to 16, and post Compulsory Education, comprising vocational training in cooking and hairdressing as well as Bachillerato (pre-university and higher vocational studies). We attend at around 900 students in total. Our school also offers programmes for some students who are unable to achieve ordinary degrees, in order to avoid early school leaving. We work jointly with the local government to provide enterprises which help those students to learn a profession as well as to get a certificate showing their abilities. There are 108 teachers working in our school, and every year about 30% of them change their destination. Despite doing our best to provide a clean and socially warm environment to our students, we are facing difficulties in raising their awareness in keeping the school area clean and in breaking down the socio-cultural barriers among them due to the fact of the high diversity among our 880 enrolled students: from 31 different nationalities. Many of them come from a European or South-American country, but we also have students from different African countries (Senegal, Nigeria, among others), from Pakistan and other non-European countries. We also have a large variety of students; as an example, we have 233 students with special needs, which means more than 26% of the total of students. Most of them are from families working in the tourist area. In many cases their families work only in summer and there is a high rate of unemployment during the winter season. Our school vision pays attention to these kids and we aim to give them opportunities to feel integrated: the opportunity to exchange and communicate their experience with other students from different countries, languages, cultures and traditions while showing their own as well, which improves their motivation and their knowledge about foreign countries, languages, sciences, arts and technologies of the real Europe.
